Last night
All night the wind swept over the house
The rain kept lashing the poor trees and the grass
They did not mind this truant intrusion
And through our dream
Swirling, gushing water through the streets ,
Muddy and gurgling
Rattling the windows,
Rustling around and below our bed
So that we rode
Over wild water ,at least in our minds
In a white ship breasting the waves.
We rode through the night
On green, marbled water
Half-waking, watched
The darkness , eroded peaks of
Mental imagery
The lightening
Sailed past our windows;
Rode out the night into some wild country,
And awoke, the house merged into silence,
Punctuated and pierced by pitter patter
Music transcending me into my childhood
And then it stopped
I saw it , through the motionless baleen of branches,
And through time,
Light that shone
On a landscape of ivory,
The Sun shone
But its rays
At least for that day
Did not match , the munificence
Of the clinging raindrops and the games
They played in my mind
